NAVARRE -- A Newcomerstown woman was killed Wednesday, Jan. 9 when the Buick Park Avenue she was driving on Route 21 south of Navarre collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.

Sapphira C. Ciriano, 21, of Horse Shoe Bend Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Todd Zorger, 52, Carrollton, was not injured in the collision at approximate 10:15 a.m.

According to reports, the Buick driven by Ciriano was northbound on Route 21 when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with the southbound 2001 Mack truck driven by Zorger. Following the collision, the truck that was hauling a load of gravel left the roadway and struck a guardrail.

A representative with the Stark County Coroner's Office said Ciriano "died instantly." She was freed from the heavily-damaged Buick by mechanical means.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused Ciriano to drive left of center

The accident closed Route 21 between U.S. 62 and the Tuscarawas-Stark County line for approximately three hours.
