Mrs. Lindsey Rufener, a chemist at LMI Custom Mixing in Cambridge, recently visited the 7th-grade science classes of Mr. Don Stevens and Mr. Jamie Lewis at Newcomerstown Middle School. The purpose of her visit was to teach the students about chemical reactions, and to help them understand what chemical change actually is and how it occurs, by learning about how different plastics are made and how new plastics are engineered. After listening and watching Mrs. Lindsey's presentation, each student got to actively participate in a hands-on activity. They each received silly putty, to help demonstrate the different states of plastic, from a solid to acting/reacting as a liquid. Science ... serious and silly at the same time!
