DOVER -- With tax season in full swing, thousands of Ohioans are looking to get the highest return possible without having to pay a high fee. To save taxpayers a little extra money this year, when individuals and families can use every extra dollar, the Dover Public Library is partnering with Harcatus and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks to offer a free Tax Clinic beginning Jan. 29 and running through April 8.
Free tax assistance is provided through The Ohio Benefit Bank, an innovative online service that connects low- and moderate-income Ohioans with more than 20 work support programs and tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, child tax credits, and education credits. Ohioans can file their federal and state taxes for free with a trained counselor, or they can file on their own at www.ohiobenefits.org. Tax clinic assistance is available at the Dover Public Library for the following dates and times:
Jan. 29 from 3 to 7 p.m.
Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Feb. 27, from 2 to 7 p.m.
March 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
March 28 from 3 to 7 p.m.
April 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
April 8 from 3 to 7 p.m.
"We are excited to partner with Harcatus and The Ohio Benefit Bank on this project," said Mary Prysi of the Dover Public Library. "This is a great way for people to get the tax assistance help they need at no cost."
The average Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is about $2,170, yet approximately one in six Ohioans eligible for the EITC do not claim it. Those unclaimed ETIC funds mean that local communities miss out on millions of dollars that would have otherwise generated economic activity and growth. Clients using the Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) can maximize their return without having to pay a high fee to have their taxes completed.
Residents interested in making an appointment for the free tax clinic can call the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123. Participants must have earned less than $68,000 in 2012.
Community members interested in volunteering as OBB counselors are welcome to call Stephanie Fish at Harcatus at 330-343-8770, ext. 204.
