The Tuscarawas Philharmonic is honored to welcome back renowned pianist Orion Weiss to join them for their performance on April 22. Entitled Rhapsody in Blue!, this thrilling event will also feature the High School Honors Band, an annual gathering of talented young musicians.

The Philharmonic will open the concert with Overture to William Tell by Gioachino Rossini. Weiss will join the orchestra to perform Franz Liszt's dramatic After a Reading of Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata and George Gershwin's jazzy Rhapsody in Blue.

Weiss will also perform two pieces in tribute to Philharmonic friends, Robert Vandall and Sherri Weidman, who passed away in recent months.

A native of Lyndhurst, Ohio, Weiss is one of the most sought-after soloists in his generation of American musicians. He has performed with major American orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic. His deeply felt and exceptionally crafted performances go far beyond his technical mastery and have won him worldwide acclaim.

Now in its fifth year, the High School Honors Band will fill the stage to perform great classic and contemporary band literature, including Percy Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry" and Henry Fillmore's "The President's March."

"2017 boasts the largest ensemble yet," said Steven Stroup, coordinator of the group. "It will include 75 student musicians from 11 area schools playing alongside the wind section of the Philharmonic."

"I think of this program as a kind of mini music festival," said conductor and music director, Eric Benjamin. "It celebrates the orchestra's connection to a distinguished pianist and applauds the rich history of band music in the Tuscarawas Valley."

Rhapsody in Blue! will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center. Arrive early to hear the Tuscarawas Philharmonic Children's Chorus perform in the lobby beginning at 6:45 p.m. under the direction of Laura Barkett, with Jennifer Basnett accompanying.

Tickets for the concert are available at www.TuscarawasPhilharmonic.org or by calling the Performing Arts Center box office at 330-308-6400. Tickets range from $24-$36 with student and senior discounts available.
