Name: Jennifer L. Lowery
Hometown: Born and raised in Canton, but I now live in Dover Township.
What do you do for a living? Police officer for the Village of Newcomerstown.
How did you decide on becoming a police officer? I signed up for a citizen's academy at the Stark County Sheriff's Office in Spring of 2001. I loved it so much that by fall of 2001, I was starting the police academy.
You've incorporated social media with your job. Why is it important? Social media is important because it gets information out to the public in real time. Unfortunately people rely on social media, rather than the newspaper or TV to get their information. I'm using it in our department to try to bridge the gap between our community and the police. I like to showcase the positive interactions that we (officers) have with the community, such as issuing citations for a free ice-cream cone from Chilly Willy's, to kids who are practicing SAFE Bicycle skills. I also use it to solve crimes. Every time I turn to Facebook for information regarding either a lost dog or a crime that has occurred, the community steps up, by sharing the information and providing tips.

What is most gratifying about being a police officer? The most gratifying is knowing that you helped at least one person, that day, solve their problem. To them, it's a big deal, especially if they decide to come to you and ask for help. I get a lot of people who apologize to me for burdening me with their problems. I tell them not to worry/stress about it, as that is my job. I'm here to serve the community.
What is most difficult about the job? The most difficult part of the job is keeping my own emotions/feelings out it. For example, having to interact with someone who has an addiction problem. I know what they need to do, but I can't force them to get help. Then you have the family who looks at me, pleads with me to help their child/family member ... but I know that they can't force them to get help. They have to want to help themselves.
What do you like to do when you have time away from work? When I'm not at work, I like to attend my son's sporting events, hang out with my family/friends or relax at home with our dog, Ally and watch some TV. Lately, I've taken up rock painting and hiding them for other people to find. The idea is to make people smile and to brighten their day when they find your rock. I am a member of Newcomerstown Ohio Rocks Facebook group and other local rock groups. #Jallyrox
The team(s) I root for the most are I serve the Village of Newcomerstown, so of course I root for the Newcomerstown Trojans. My son goes to New Philadelphia (my husband's alma mater), so I root for the #Quakers. I went to Canton McKinley so I root for the Bulldogs. I graduated last year from Kent State Tuscarawas so I root for the Golden Flashes. I also root for The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians and the Cavs.
My favorite band or singer is Eminem, Pitbull, Imagine Dragons, Adele, Bruno Mars, the list goes on.
Family? My husband is Sgt. Bruce Lowery of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office (married for 13 1/2 years) and we have a 13-yr old son, Jadan, and our dog, Ally.
