KENT -- Two Kent State University students have made a name for themselves among internet users worldwide.

What started a joke on Tinder, a social network for dating, has earned the two a trip to Hawaii where they will meet for the first time, according to a conversation among the three on Twitter and a report from BuzzFeed.

On Sept. 20, 2014, Josh Avsec first messaged Michelle Arendas, saying, "Hey Michelle," according to screenshots placed on Twitter in recent days.

Two months later, she responded, saying her phone died. The intervals between their communications increased in length, but the long-running joke continued through at least February 2017, which was the last message that fit on Avzec's screen shot of their conversation, which he posted on Twitter.

At one point, Avsec held out from messaging Arendas for about 10 months.

"Hi I really do apologize for just now getting back to you, I've just had a really busy week," she messaged him Dec. 20, 2015.

His response came in October 2016: "Michelle, I don't want you to think I'm rude, midterms are coming up and it's just been really hard to keep up with it all."

With a screenshot of their messages attached, Avsec tweeted July 7, "Hahahaha one day I'm going to meet this girl and it's going to be epic."

On Monday, Tinder took matters into its own hands and tweeted to the two that it's time they met.

"It's time that you got together IRL. You have 24 hours to decide the city you want to have your first date in and we'll send you there!" Tinder tweeted them.

Since the offer, Avsec has received Tweets from well-wishers from India, Germany and the United Kingdom.

"My mouth is literally sore because I have been smiling nonstop for 3 days straight," he tweeted Wednesday.

Arendas thanked the internet for its support in a Tuesday Tweet.

"Honestly just a huge s/o to the internet! thx for making some of my dreams come true, I've always been a big fan!!!!!!" she tweeted.
