WEST LAFAYETTE -- The village of West Lafayette will be marking a historical milestone during this year's West Lafayette Homecoming Festival (July 27-29, 2017).

It will be the first time that the village has held a fireworks display. As reported earlier in The News, West Lafayette Mayor Stephen Bordenkircher said there has been no fireworks display held in West Lafayette in at least the past 40 years. Lifelong resident June Markley supports that information, saying there has been no fireworks display in West Lafayette for at least 75 years. Markley and her husband, Dan, are local historians and believe that there has never been any public fireworks displays held in West Lafayette.

A bucket drive at both ends of Main Street for several hours on Saturday, July 8, and generated the $3,000 needed for the fireworks event. Bordenkircher said with the bucket drive funds, and the money from the other donation sites, there will be nearly $4,000 and said the village will be expecting to have a fantastic exhibit.

The fireworks display is being planned for Saturday, July 29, at 10 p.m. (weather permitting), and will be able to be viewed from the Ridgewood High School field.

The queen's contest will be Thursday evening, and the parade will be Friday evening at 7 p.m., with line-up at 6 p.m.
