Interim street supervisor approved

Newcomerstown village council recently approved employee Bob Shepherd as the interim street and cemetery department superintendent following the recent resignation of Chris Jones. Council also approved Shepherd for a $2 per hour increase to compensate the change in his job position. The village announced that there had been nine recent applicants for the position, with six of the applicants to be interviewed this week.

Items discussed at the July 17, 2017 regular council session included:

The village has been assessing, and planning to remove more of the aging trees that are in poor condition, and are a risk for falling and causing potential injury/ damage to citizens, or property. Heather Stein-Wells thanked the street department for recent assistance, cleaning up trees branches, limbs, and debris following recent storms in the area.

The Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad is hosting Wine, Dine & Swine at the Yellow Butterfly Winery on Aug. 31 from 4 p.m. -7 p.m. Tickets can be obtained from NERS members.

Jim Reed, council representative for Tri-County Ambulance, reported EMT Alvin Moore had been approved for a $5,000/year increase in pay.

Council approved resignation of Police Officer Anthony Frame, effective for 7/5/2017.

Council approved hiring three part-time police officers; Jeremy Garner, William Goff and Bernard Eggleston.

Council approved the police department to post for the hiring of two more part-time police officers.

The village is looking at thinning the trees in the wooded hillside behind Cy Young Park. Dennis Cabot, West Lafayette had been contacted, and was agreeable to assess the trees to be removed. The removal/thinning of some of the trees will promote strengthening of some of the more quality trees, and generate additional money for the village to use for the park/ pool.

Council approved resolution #10-2017 regarding the development of a hazard mitigation plan for the village. The plan is necessary in order for the village to be eligible for federal funding.

Council approved resolution #11-2017 regarding tax incentive review council, annual enterprise zone agreement.

The next regular council session is scheduled for Aug. 7.
