Claymont 56, Newcomerstown 46
UHRICHSVILLE -- Visiting Newcomerstown High nearly overcame a double-digit deficit but wound up just short and suffered a 56-46 setback to Claymont on Tuesday.
Despite trailing 27-14 at the halftime break, the Trojans (3-13) responded with a 17-9 scoring advantage in the third period to minimize the Mustangs' lead down to a mere three points.
Claymont (4-13) shifted the momentum in its favor in the final round, however, outscoring Newcomerstown 20-15 to claim the non-conference victory.
Pacing the Trojans' offensive attack was George Brode with a team-high 19 points while Bryce Barbera recorded 12 markers.
It was Jake Smith earning the game-high scoring honors as he posted 21 points followed by Jalynn Holmes with 12 and Lane Delong with 10.
WEST LAFAYETTE -- Visiting Strasburg High spoiled Senior Night festivities for host Ridgewood High on Friday night with a lopsided 56-28 victory in Inter-Valley Conference action.
The visiting Tigers quickly silenced the home town crowd opening the contest with a quick 6-0 run and then applied full-court pressure early and often in the first quarter to force six RHS turnovers in the frame to snare a 20-2 lead after one quarter.
Trailing 34-11 at halftime, the Generals (4-13, 2-10) played their best quarter of the game in the third period but still trailed by a 50-20 margin entering the fourth quarter.
Senior Keith Leindecker scored all nine of the Ridgewood's points in the third quarter and finished with 13 points and four rebounds to lead RHS. Junior Zach Wright added seven points for the Generals.
Shevin Javersak paced Strasburg (17-2) with 14 points with Jared Burnworth just missing double figures with nine and Mike Neidenthal adding six points.
East Canton 69, Newcomerstown 36
NEWCOMERSTOWN -- Visiting East Canton High used a balanced scoring attack to post a 69-36 victory over Newcomerstown in Inter-Valley Conference boys' hardwood action on Friday.
The Hornets placed three players in double figures led by Mitch Mitchell with 17 points, followed by Anthony Baad with 14 and Trey Mallonn with 11. Just missing double figures for East Canton (4-12, 4-9 IVC) was James McCullough with nine.
Mallonn tallied five points in the opening period to lead the Hornets to a 15-6 lead after one quarter, then posted a 19-13 scoring edge in the second stanza to build a 34-19 halftime lead.
East Canton would then outscore the Trojans 35-17 in the second half to post the IVC road victory.
Senior Bryce Barbera pumped in a game-high 20 points to lead Newcomerstown (3-14, 2-11 IVC), with seniors George Brode adding six and Brandan Septer finishing with five points for the Trojans.
