Tough week of action for local softball squads

Garaway 14, Newcomerstown 0

SUGARCREEK -- Visiting Newcomerstown High's season came to a conclusion on Monday with a 14-0 shutout loss to Inter-Valley Conference foe, Garaway in Division III Sectional softball action.

The Lady Pirates outhit the Lady Trojans 11-2, paced by Kaitlin Stress with three singles and a trio of RBI, Zoey Johnson who added a pair of base hits and two RBI and Sierra Slentz chipped in one hit and drove in three runs.

Leah Kellish and Rachel Hinton collected the onnly base hits for Newcomerstown.

Raegan Smith took the loss in the circle for the Lady Trojans, fanning six and walking five while Allison Luneborg struck out four, walking one and earned the victory in a complete-game effort for Garaway.

Coshocton 1, Ridgewood 0

WEST LAFAYETTE -- Erin Storsin stroked a game-winning RBI single in the eight inning as the visiting Coshocton Lady Redskins earned a berth in the Division III Sectional finals with a 1-0 shutout of the host Ridgewood Lady Generals on Monday.

Ally Stein pitched a two-hit shutout to collected the win for the Lady Redskins fanning four Ridgewood batters and gave up two walks. Sydney Zinkon also went the distance in the circle for the Lady Generals giving up seven hits and had five strikeouts and one base-on-balls.

Multiple hitters for Coshocton (11-13) were Morgan Bryant and Courtney Guthrie each with a pair of singles. Ridgewood (12-12) got singles from Audrey Tingle and Sadie Wilson with Tingles also drawing a walk and stealing a base.

Philo 5, Indian Valley 3

GNADENHUTTEN -- Corin Tom broke a deadlock at two in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run homer to propel the visiting Philo Lady Electrics to a 5-3 win over the host Indian Valley Lady Braves and a berth in the Division III sectional finals.

The fourth seeded Lady Braves battled back to knot the score at two with a run in sixth inning, Philo opened the seventh with singles from Maylea Tom and Camber Revennaugh and a sacrifice bunt by Molly Fuller set up the three-run blast by Corin Tom to give the Lady Electrics a 5-2 edge.

Indian Valley loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and a Philo error got one run home to narrow the margin to 5-3. Lady Electrics' pitcher Katie Pride threw a runner out at home for the second out and then coaxed a groundout to end the game and preserve the 5-3 Philo win and a trip to the Division III sectional finals.

Pride went the distance in the circle for Philo (11-12) allowing five hits and three earned runs. She also drove in a run with a double in the two-run third inning when the Lady Electrics took a 2-1 lead. Maiah Bell had a double and two singles to paced the Philo offense and Maylea Tom, batting in the eighth spot, also doubled and singled twice.

Garaway 14, Newcomerstown 0

SUGARCREEK -- Visiting Newcomerstown High watched its season come to a conclusion in a 14-0 shutout loss to the hands of Garaway in Inter-Valley Conference make-up softball action on Tuesday.

The Lady Pirates were scoring early and often with a five-run first inning and then tallied four more runs in each of the next two frames to take control of the contest.

Winning pitcher Allison Luneborg held the Lady Trojans scoreless by surrendering only three hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort.

On the other side, Gabby McPeek got roughed up in the first inning for Newcomerstown (6-17, 4-11 IVC) before Raegan Smith came in for relief help in the second inning fanning three and walking three.

Kayla Gibson, Caitlin Durr and Cheyenne McMullen all recorded a base hit for the Lady Trojans while Luneborg helped herself at the dish by slugging a double, two singles and a game-high four RBI for Garaway.
