Students at the West School in Newcomerstown were treated to an exciting science assembly March 5 by Miami University in Middletown. The school qualified for this program through the participation in the Advancing Ohio's Physical Science Proficiency class last summer by Regina Schilling and Janel Travis. Students observed science experiments that were tied to the Ohio content standards and connected to various occupations. The presenters from Miami were Ed Smyth, a retired high school chemistry teacher, and Kate Miller, a Miami University content specialist. West School teachers also participated in an in-service to learn physical science concepts and ways to utilize experiments in the classroom. Here, Smyth shows the students how to chemically make a toothpaste-like substance.
