Nate Malenke instructs a group of teens at the West Lafayette Branch Library March 19 on the art of Japanese calligraphy, known as Kanji (pronounced kon-gee). Malenke, a former Ridgewood High School graduate, lived in Japan for three years -- thus learning some of the Japanese customs. The Kanji presentation is just one of several "teen focused" programs that the library has been offering recently. According to library staff, the afterschool programs are a combination of learning and social events for area teens. The library tries to feature a topic that is currently of interest to young people. The Kanji presentation was very popular and registration was to reportedly filled to capacity.
