Nc'town man served on ship that rescued kidnapped captain

Cargo ship Capt. Richard Phillips was rescued last Monday after pirates stormed the Maersk Alabama ship near Somalia in the Indian Ocean. The U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Boxer, rescued Capt. Phillips from his captures.

The USS Boxer was the sixth ship to carry the name Boxer and would be the fourth ship of the new Wasp Class Multi-purpose Assault ship (LHD). The latest ship's keel was authenticated on April 8, 1991, and the ship was launched on Aug. 13, 1993. It wasn't until Feb. 11, 1995, four years after construction on her began, that the United States Navy utilized the ship as the fourth Multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ship. The ship is some 844 feet in length and can hold 1,174 crewmen and 2,070 troops.
