NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Levi Michael, 34, of 5116 Beagle Club Rd., Newcomerstown, appeared in Tuscarawas County Court last week for a bond hearing relating to his arrest Aug. 11 by Tuscarawas County Sheriff's deputies.

Michael was charged with one count of rape. The charge alleges that, on July 28, Michael engaged in sexual conduct with a child under 13 years of age.

Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Styer and Detective Cathy Bickford appeared at the hearing.

Styer stated at the hearing, "The state believes, if released from jail, Mr. Michael would pose a risk of grave danger to others."

Styer requested that bail be set at no less than $500,000.

Acting Judge James J. Ong set bail at $1,000,000 and appointed Michael the public defender. A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m.
