Burning leaves in the village is not permittedMabel ThorntonCorrespondent PORT WASHINGTON -- Port Washington Village Council heard the second reading of an ordinance to amend the zoning map of the village. The third and final reading will be heard and voted on at the next meeting of council Nov. 17.Mayor Tom Gardner wished to remind residents there is a burning ordinance in the village and that the burning of leaves is not permitted.Council learned the Street Department maintenance employee Rick Swiger will be having surgery Nov. 17 and will not be working for six weeks.Gardner said the police department and Delaware Valley Fire Department has been invited to participate in the Newcomerstown Christmas Parade on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m.Council voted to hire Donna Meek to clean for one hour per week starting in January at minimum wage.The Delaware Valley Fire department will be serving breakfast on Nov. 14 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the fire station. The breakfasts have been very well attended. Joe Bourne made a statement thanking council and Salem Township for their cooperation in making the fire department the success that it is and for all the equipment that it has to run efficiently.Mayor Gardner thanked the fire and police departments for their help with the trick or treat night to make it a safe night for everyone.
