An empty bank account and a group of determined individuals will be bringing back the Toys for Local Tots this year. But, they need your help in doing so.
The Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce will be organizing the local effort for (children in the Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District only who are ages birth through twelfth grade) Toys for Local Tots.
Last year, $4,000 was needed to supply some 200 children with a toy on Christmas. Last year's organizer was Marcy Clarkston. She, along with several individuals, continued the Toys for Local Tots. However, health problems will not allow her to help this year. That's where the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce has decided to help.
This year's goal is to raise at least $4,000, however, the hope is to raise more. Organizer Janet Chaney said she expects more families, with more children, to need assistance this year, especially with the tough economy.
Merchants who donated last year, as well as new ones, will be asked to contribute to this year's goal. There will also be collection cans at various locations, a request to donate will be added to the Newcomerstown facebook page on the Internet and a bank account will be set up at Huntington Bank for community members or organizations to donate. Donations may be mailed to Huntington Bank, c/o Scott Heil, 100 W. Main St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832.
Staff members at Huntington Bank have also decided to have "Dress Down Fridays" where employees, if they choose, can wear jeans for $5. They will also have a Toys for Local Tots' Angel Tree in the lobby where those in the community can take a child's ticket off the tree and purchase gifts just for that child.
New or gently-used toys may also be dropped off at Dale Gress Real Estate in Newcomerstown or the Newcomerstown News office.
As far as applications, they will be taken Wednesday, Nov. 25 from 8 a.m to noon in the Library Annex in Newcomerstown.
