Sending, collecting valentines of love
Niki Wolfe/Newcomerstown News
Wanda Belle of Newcomerstown has been collecting valentines since 1962. At first, the valentines belonged to her husband's family but they have since evolved into an elaborate collection of hundreds. People would just give them to her or she would find them along her travels. Belle has some that date back to the early 1900s. But, all her valentines are different, some are Victorian, some are mechanical, some are for children and some are so insulting that the United States Post Office refused to deliver them (known as Penny Dreadfuls because it only took a penny to send). Because of her knowledge about valentines, Belle has given talks at group meetings and at Roscoe Village. Part of her valentines collection will be on display at the Olde Main Street Museum and Social Center for one year. If you have a collection of items, you would like to loan to the museum, contact Mary Watts or Ray McFadden.
