Local residents have been enjoying Memory Park lately since the spring weather has finally arrived but now they are going to have to resort to sitting on the ground. Somewhere between Monday afternoon and the early hours of Wednesday morning, someone took the park's picnic table.
Tourism Unlimited founder/coordinator Audrey Hanni said the table was constructed of very heavy wood and steel. Normally, it would require at least three individuals to move it.
The table was last noticed on Monday afternoon when several residents were sitting at it. Greg Berkshire of Newcomerstown said he was taking a walk on Bridge Street early Wednesday morning when he discovered the table missing. He then reported the theft to the Newcomerstown Police Department and a report was filed.
Hanni, who has owned the park land since 1993, said, "It's a real pity that someone would do this. The park is there for everyone to enjoy."
Hanni said the table was donated to the park last year by former resident, Dan Sullivan.
Memory Park has been a part of the community for the past 15 years, and has been the site of many festivals and other local events.
