NEW PHILADELPHIA -- In an effort to decrease alcohol and speed-related accidents and fatalities within Tuscarawas County, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's office has once again been awarded federal funding from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) for increased traffic enforcement. The 2011 High Visibility Enforcement Overtime grant will provide 100 percent reimbursement for 700 hours of overtime for stepped-up traffic enforcement. This year's award is for $27,087.51.
As a result of last year's award, the Sheriff's office performed 580 traffic stops and issued 327 citations including 224 speeding citations.
"These funds are critical to ensuring that we are doing everything possible to keep our roadways safer," said Sheriff Walt Wilson. "We are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address traffic enforcement safety."
It begins this month and will end September 2011.
