Taxpayers to save money on school's purchase agreementWilliam CasteelNewcomerstown NewsThe Newcomerstown Board of Education brought some good news for local taxpayers recently. During the Nov. 8 board meeting, members approved a resolution for a bond purchasing agreement which will help to pay the school district's share of the previous renovations that were done at the West Elementary, Newcomerstown Middle School and Newcomerstown High School. The good news is that according to Treasurer Dan Stocker, an early pay off through the purchase will equal a $435,000 savings for local taxpayers. The bond is expected to be paid one year earlier. The payoff is expected to be completed by 2022.Other items presented or discussed included:* Approval of the following school volunteers: Wrestling, Nic Lute, Jake Fox, Willie Weaver, Shaun Lower, Donnie Stevens; and girl's basketball, Brianna Zehnder.* Leave of absence for Cassandra Krebs was approved. Krebs will be on leave from Jan. 1, 2011, through March 25, 2011. * Approval of the following extracurricular one-year supplemental contracts for 2010-2011: Zach Jones, Newcomerstown Middle School Cross Country coach (stipend $1,332) and Middle School Boys Basketball coach (stipend $1,865); Tyler McKenzie, Varsity Assistant Wrestling (stipend $1,865); Joel Hillwig, Pep Band advisor (half stipend $666.17); and Mike Hoskins, Pep Band advisor (half stipend $799.50).* Approval of five sick days for Barbara Opphile to be repaid from future accumulated days.* Eighth grade music students were approved for a trip to Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a Nov. 22 trip. * James E. Tufford was approved to provide snow removal for school parking lots for this winter. Tufford will utilize his own vehicle and snow plow. He will be paid $35 per hour.* Approval was given to Relay For Life 2011 to use Lee Stadium, including the concession stands, and high school cafeteria. The event is scheduled for June 17, 2011, through June 18, 2011. The school board later entered executive session to discuss matters of negotiations. No action was known at this time.
