Voters in the Village of Newcomerstown will be selecting its new mayor when they go to the polls this coming Tuesday, May 3.

Only two Democratic candidates have filed petitions for the primary election.

James Earl McCormick, 648 Spaulding Ave., Newcomerstown, and James Friel, 600 Keiser Road, Newcomerstown, both filed petitions stating their intent to seek the party's nomination for the Mayoral position in the village.

However, nonpartisan candidates have until Aug. 10 to file for the mayor's position. In that case, the winner of the Democratic primary would face the nonpartisan candidate(s) in November.

Meanwhile, residents in Tuscarawas County and portions of overlapping Coshocton and Guernsey counties will decide the outcome of both the Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District and Indian Valley Local School District renewal tax levies.

Newcomerstown Exempted Village Schools are seeking a 9.2-mill renewal tax levy for current expenses, with collection to commence 2011 and first due in 2012.

Meanwhile, Indian Valley Local Schools are seeking a 3.6-mill renewal tax levy for providing the emergency requirements in the school district. Collection of the levy will start in 2012 and will first be due in 2013.

The polls are open Tuesday, May 3 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
