Newcomerstown voters selected which Democrat they would like to see in the Newcomerstown Mayor's position when they went to the polls last Tuesday.
James A. Friel slipped by opponent James Earl McCormick by only nine votes, or 130 to 121 votes, respectively.
Friel is active in the community by serving as the president of the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce, member of the Newcomerstown Board of Public Affairs (Utilities Board) and was the former Newcomerstown Police Chief.
Friel will face independent candidate Dave Hickman in the November general election.
Hickman filed a petition with the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections by the May 2 deadline to be in the running for the mayor's position in the Nov. 8 election. However, the elections board has until July 15 to certify and verify the petition.
Meanwhile, write-in candidates have until Aug. 29 to file their petitions.
Incumbent Mayor Steven B. Guy, a Republican, isn't seeking another term and no other Republican filed for the primary race.
The new four-year term for mayor begins Jan. 1, 2012, with a current salary of $10,000.
In all, only about 15 percent of the total registered voters in Tuscarawas County cast votes Tuesday.
