NEW PHILADELPHIA -- A Newcomerstown man was one of two plumbers who were trapped last Tuesday when a trench collapsed on the job site.

Firefighters from New Philadelphia arrived at 3750 University Drive NE shortly after 11 a.m. to free Simpson Heating and Cooling employees Lloyd "Mike" Thornberry of Newcomerstown and Chad Simpson of New Philadelphia.

Reportedly, the trench collapsed around the men while they were working.

One man was freed by the time fire personnel arrived at the scene. However, it took firefighters about 20 minutes to free the remaining individual, who was buried from the waist down.

Thornberry was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton with possible broken ribs and Simpson was flown to Akron General Hospital with a broken pelvis.

The collapse occurred at a construction site for a new home overseen by Lanzer's Excavating in Uhrichsville.
