NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Because of an application error, only one name will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot for the office of Newcomerstown Mayor.
The Tuscarawas County Board of Elections rejected two petitions for independent candidates for offices in the Village of Newcomerstown when they met Monday, June 6.
Board of Elections Director Charles "Chuck" Miller reportedly said mayoral candidate Dave W. Hickman failed to fill out a portion of the application which made it ineligible.
Therefore, Democratic candidate James A. Friel's name will be the only one listed on the general election ballot for the mayoral position.
Friel, who was contested in the May 3 primary election by challenger James Earl McCormick, recently won a recount for the mayoral position. That recount was requested by McCormick.
The new four-year term for mayor begins Jan. 1, 2012, with a current salary of $10,000.
Meanwhile, the other Newcomerstown petition that was rejected by the Board of Elections was filed by Claudia P. Hoskins. Reportedly, 18 signatures were thrown out on her application.
Miller said that neither Hickman nor Hoskins can file as a write-in candidate.
The Board of Elections will accept applications for school board and township trustee candidates until Aug. 10 while write-ins must file all paperwork by Aug. 29 for the Nov. 8 general election.
