The cause of a fatal and tragic Memorial Day fire in Newcomerstown has been ruled "undetermined" by the Ohio Division of the State Fire Marshal.
The fire, which occurred May 30, claimed the lives of Rachel Speicher, 27, and her 10-year old son, Brandon Speicher.
The fire occurred in the family's home at 537 Mulvane St., Newcomerstown, and was likely the result of an electrical malfunction in a bedroom in the northeast corner of the residence.
Autopsies were performed on both victims by Dr. James Hubert, Tuscarawas County coroner, and revealed evidence of smoke inhalation.
Three other occupants of the home, a woman and two children, were able to escape the fire from the 1-1/2 story rental home.
The home was equipped with a smoke alarm, but it had no battery.
The State Fire Marshal's Office was assisted in its investigation by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office and the Newcomerstown Fire Department.
