WEST LAFAYETTE Pending the next two consecutive readings, the residents of West Lafayette will likely be seeing a rate increase for water and sewer services after the first of the new year. First reading was given to the ordinance on Monday night (November 14) during the villages regular council session.

According to Village Administrator Dave Kadri, the increase in water services will be at 1 percent for all useage under 11,000 gallons, anything over that will be at a 1.5 percent rate increase. Kadri said the 1 percent increase would be amount to about $3.36 per year. Sewer customers will also note a 1 percent increase as well. Kadri said the village has not raised sewer rates in several years, though the water rates had been increased in the past.

The water useage scale is as follows: First 2,000 gallons, $8.99 per 1,000 gallons; next 3,000 gallons, $7.36 per 1,000 gallons; next 3000 gallons, $5.88 per 1000 gallons; next 3000 gallons, $4.71 per 1,,000 gallons and over 11,000 gallons, $3.85 per 1,000 gallons.

The new rates are scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2012. This would apply to all billings on/after Jan. 1. The monthly sewer rate will be at the rate of $5.44 per 1,000 gallons.

The rate increase is required to off set costs of operations and management of the water and waste water treatment plant.

Other business discussed by council included:

First reading for ordinance to provide for procedure in charging late and delinquent charges, and termination of water services.

Council approved emergency resolution to transfer funds for the villages purchase of an underground water line locator.

Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Pretty Package contest to benefit Toys for Tots. Chamber is asking $3 to enter the contest.

Packages must contain a new item for a boy or girl at a $10 minimum value. The package must be dropped off at the Club Aries Craft Show at Ridgewood High School between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dec. 3.

The winner of the prettiest package will receive a $50 Walmart gift card. The winner will be announced one hour prior to the end of the craft show. Further information can be obtained by calling Emily Bradford at 740-294-2349.

The residents of West Lafayette (anyone with a 43845 zip code is eligible to participate) is invited to enter the Christmas Lighting contest which will also be sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Interested participants must register at Brothers Hardware before Nov. 25.

The fee to enter is $10. Judging for the event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17 between 7 and 10 p.m.

One grand prize winner will receive a $100 Walmart gift card.
