Tuscarawas County Republican voters in last Tuesday's primary election selected Rick Santorum to face Barack Obama in the November general election for the U.S. presidency.

Santorum received 40 percent of the vote in the county.

In all, only about 18 percent or 10,575 of registered voters cast ballots in the primary.

There was only one local contested race for voters in Newcomerstown.

James Wolff narrowly defeated J. Earl McCormick for Tuscarawas County Central Committee in Newcomerstown Precinct 62. Wolff received 33 votes, McCormick 27.

Other Tuscarawas County Central Committee winners, who were unopposed, included: Newomerstown, Jim Carr (D), 33; Newcomerstown, Bonita J. Johnson (D), 22; Oxford Township, Thomas A. Watson II (R), 72; Port Washington, Jan Adele Slocum (R), 53; Gnadenhutten, Chuck E. Miller (D), 47; and Jefferson Township/Stone Creek, Janice M. Cronebaugh (R), 86.
