Transportation officials say a single-engine plane made a 180-degree turn before going off the radar and crashing into a wooded area in Ohio, killing the pilot from New Jersey.
Authorities are investigating why the aircraft crashed Saturday just outside of Newcomerstown.
A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board tells WTOV-TV that the last communication from the plane came about five minutes before it disappeared from the radar. He says the impact of the crash buried the engine several feet in the ground.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration says investigators will look for witnesses to help determine what happened.
The State Highway Patrol said 59-year-old Emil Bisaccia of New Jersey died at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
