George and Bev Darr of Newcomerstown received the Newcomerstown Teachers' Association Friends of Education Award recently. Bev has organized and ran the East School dinner/fundraiser for several years and continues to provide cakes for that dinner. She started the "Sweets for your Sweet" sale, and also provided boxes, gloves and scales for it. She organized Make a Difference Day, and the first Veterans' Day assembly at the East School and arranges for flags to be donated so that each student can have one. She also plays the keyboard for that assembly every year. The Darrs have also: Provided wagons for the Homecoming parades; rain gauges for kindergarten classrooms; melons and supplies for annual kindergarten picnic; melons for Back to School Fair; Darr Farms has provided mulch, trucks and labor for the East School playground (twice this year); pumpkins every year for Halloween for all East School classrooms, plus corn shocks; and have given trips to the pumpkin patch for all of East School with a guided tour, and even allowed the East School PTO members to go to the pumpkin patch and each pick out a pumpkin after their fall meeting. During the year of construction, when everything had to be moved, Darr Farms helped with the moving.
