The sixth grade team has nominated Brea Garretson as the Student of the Month for May 2012, and the teachers have numerous comments to share about their star student. Brea enters the school with a positive attitude and a smile on her face on a daily basis. She puts effort forth in all of her classes and always utilizes her time well throughout the day. Brea sets a positive example for her peers to follow, and her teachers appreciate her hard work and dedication to NMS, and encourage her to keep up the excellent work. Brea is the daughter of Jason and Michelle Garretson, and her favorite class at Newcomerstown Middle School is a tie between Science and HELA (Honors English Language Arts) because she enjoys the activities that she gets to do, understands these subjects well, and says the teachers make it exciting to learn. One of her strengths is that she relies on God for her guidance. Some of her hobbies and extracurricular activities that she participates in are basketball, softball, 4-H, playing the piano, singing, Bright Lights Bible Study, Meta, swimming and spending time with her family and friends. She feels the best things about NMS are the great teachers, school dances, and the opportunities it offers. The best piece of advice Brea has ever received came from her mom, who said, "Be yourself; be a leader, not a follower!" In the future, Brea hopes to go to college and earn her teaching degree, and be on Cupcake Wars. So far in her life, her greatest accomplishment is making her parents proud.

Congratulations to Kaitlin Colvin, who was chosen as the seventh grade Student of the Month for May by her teachers because she is an outgoing young lady and frequently offers to help her peers and teachers. She is very responsible and completes her work on time and thoughtfully. Her teachers appreciate that she loves to read, and she is an excellent role model for her peers. Kaitlin, daughter of of Lori Colvin, said her favorite class at NMS this year is World History because Mrs. Baker is the BEST, and she thinks the best thing about Newcomerstown Middle School is her friends. Some of Kaitlin's hobbies and extracurricular activities include dance (jazz and hip hop), reading, computer, and hanging out with friends, and she feels that one of her strengths is reading. A few fun facts about Kaitlyin are that her favorite meal is Taco Bell tacos, her favorite expression is "I don't know," her worst fear is caterpillars, and she doesn't think she could live without her cell phone. So far in her life, Kaitlin feels her greatest accomplishment has been getting her five-year award for dance, and in the future, she hopes to attend Clemson University to become a veterinarian.

Eighth-grader Riley Kellish was named Student of the Month for May by her teachers because she is a stellar student, who maintains a GPA of 3.94 while also participating in many extracurricular activities. Riley's teachers have enjoyed having her in their classes this year and know that she will be successful as she enters the high school next year. Riley, daughter of Johnathan and Jodi Kellish, said her favorite class this year is history because she loves to learn about America's past, and also feels that Mr. Marsh is a great teacher. Some of her hobbies/extracurricular activities include track, softball, volleyball, cheerleading, and also Relay For Life, and feels that one of her strengths is her ability to participate and do well in sports. Riley feels that the best thing about Newcomerstown Middle School is the care and support the teachers show every day. So far in life, Riley feels her biggest accomplishment has been keeping her grades high over the years, and in the future, she hopes to attend college and make a successful life for herself. The best piece of advice Riley has ever received came from her dad who told her to "keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open."
