The Newcomerstown Bicentennial Quilt Committee is seeking information on the following:
One-room school houses -- The names of the one room school houses in the area and the dates they were in operation.
Family names -- The family name of people who have made Newcomerstown their home for the past 200 years.
Contact Marlene Ross at 498-8561 with information regarding these two items.
Also, the committee would like to have at least one quilt or wall hanging to raffle off each month in 2014. However, there is no way they an get this many made and they are wondering if anyone out there would be willing to make a quilt or wall hanging and donate it to the committee for this purpose. It can be your own idea and design, they just need help in getting at least 12 items to raffle.
The "Community Quilt" that is being quilted right now will not be auctioned or raffled. It is going to be kept in the museum for future generations to view and see what some of us did for the bicentennial.
The main work day on this quilt is every Friday at the Temperance Tavern Museum from 9 a.m. until noon or longer but the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If anyone would like to go in and put a few stitches in any of these other days, feel free to do so. Just look at how its being quilted and do the same.
So far, the response to this quilt was tremendous and some people made more than one block with their name on it. They included at least one of their blocks but could not use all of them so they have blocks left over.
There is a possibility that another quilt might be made in the future but not right now. If anyone supplied more than one block and would like to have it back, you can pick it up at the museum during quilting hours. Pick up the unused blocks up by the end of August.
