The Newcomerstown Board of Education learned of the anticipated retirement of longtime educator and principal Pat Cadle during a meeting Aug. 13.
Although he did not formally submit his letter of resignation for retirement purposes, the board anticipates that Cadle will retire effective Jan. 31, 2013.
Therefore, the board appointed fourth grade West Elementary School teacher Erin Peoples as the interim principal, effective Jan. 14, 2013.
Peoples will be transferred from the teacher's salary to the interim principal's salary which will be $34,000. Her pay is not in addition to her teacher's salary.
In other business, the board heard from parent Christie Penland-McMillan regarding the board and Athletic Council's ruling of only allowing students to participate in one sport each season. Penland-McMillan presented the board with a petition signed by both students and parents that do not approve of the change, as well as letters from her attorney and coaches. The board took no action regarding the matter.

Appropriations for fiscal year 2013 totaling $14,258,152.24.
Vendors for the 2012-2013 school years.
Donations from the Newcomerstown Moose Lodge 1337 in the amount of $214.30 and $219.91.
Membership into the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding for the upcoming school year in the amount of $569.
Participation in the Ohio Department of Education Free and Reduced Price Breakfast and Lunch programs.
Approved a mandatory four-hour in-service for bus drivers.
Resignations of Louise Swigert, middle school cook, for retirement purposes, effective June 28; and Tom Mason, bus route, effective June 25.
Transfer of Brenda Robinson, high school cafeteria to middle school cafeteria; and Roger Wright, from Roger's bus route to Tom Mason's bus route.
Stephanie Slemmer was recalled to her position in the high school cafeteria.
Ellen Hooker named a representative for the 2012-2013 Newcomerstown Local Professional Development Committee.
Jason Leggett as the senior class advisor.
Sue Simmons as a volunteer for the Flag Corps.
Employment of Ken Hacker, bus route; Sherry Cathey, middle school instructional assistant; and Jodi Bates, preschool instructional assistant.
Beth Hammersley as the interim superintendent in the absence of Superintendent Jeff Staggs.
The board will meet again 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 in the high school.
