DENNISON -- Three museums in the area have recently been the recipients of a Ronald McDonald Charities of Northeastern Ohio Inc. grant for $1,250, matched by the Ronald McDonald House Charities Global Matching Funds for an additional $1,250. The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, Historic Schoenbrunn Village and the Uhrichsville Clay Museum received the funding to be specifically used to purchase items and equipment for children's interactive educational activities.
Each museum is excited about the supplies they will be able to purchase through this grant and the resulting programs for kids.
The Dennison Depot will fulfill the goal of creating an outside play area for children with a railroad theme. A child's-size Watchman's Shanty will be reconstructed for the Depot's east end. A miniature wooden train set will also be rebuilt to provide play space and photo opportunities. This area will be enhanced with miniature railroad track, crossing signals and other small equipment on display. Funds will also be used to upgrade the World War II Private Bulldog Bing exhibit and Bing Scavenger Hunt in the museum.
Historic Schoenbrunn will use the funds to buy supplies for its new "Schoenbrunn School Days" program which will provide the opportunity for teachers to reserve the schoolhouse to teach class for a day in the site of Ohio's first schoolhouse. Supplies include lanterns, slate boards, slate pencils, quill pens, ink, journal and costumes for role-playing to learn about the 18th Century in Ohio.
The Uhrichsville Clay Museum will use the funding for two purposes: To purchase a small kiln to fire children's clay projects made at the museum's workshops and to build and supply a Clay Museum History in a Box. A former Leadership Tuscarawas project funded History in a Box supplies for all area museums. However, at that time, the Clay Museum did not exist and therefore, has not had a History Box that can be used at schools or borrowed for group educational programs. These funds will now allow the Clay Museum to join in that outreach project.
Museum Director Wendy Zucal shares her gratitude and credits local McDonald's owner Vickie Lewis, who has been instrumental in helping the museums receive this funding. The grant was designated a 25th anniversary celebration grant celebrating 25 years of operating the Ronald McDonald's House in northeast Ohio.
