NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Celebrate President's Month by joining Dr. Mari Halkovich at the Tuscarawas County Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m. as she presents the history, jewelry and fashion of the Ohio Presidential First Ladies.
Dr. Halkovich has researched the archived collections of Ohio's First Ladies and has photographed their jewelry and accessories for this talk. Her program includes a visual presentation and a pass-around of antique jewelry from the time period of each First Lady.
Debra Cahill, adult programming coordinator, said it "is fascinating to hear Mari's stories of how the American First Ladies influenced fashion, but her talent is in making the personalities of these women come alive for the audience." Displays from Mari's collection will include hair combs, mourning jewelry, handkerchief pins, cameos, fans, lace collars and vintage clothing, tiaras, and stereo photo cards and viewers.
After retiring as a school district superintendent, Mari began a second career which combines her interest in history with her love of antique and vintage jewelry. She opened her antiques business, Vintage Vanities, and began participating in antique shows, often travelling to other states to buy, sell and appraise jewelry. She also teaches classes at the University of Akron.
Mari is constantly updating and expanding her knowledge of vintage jewelry. She attends conferences and classes nationally and is a member of the Gemological Institute of America, American Society of Jewelry Historians, and Costume Jewelry Collectors International.
This free program will take place in the library's main location at 121 Fair Ave. NW in New Philadelphia. Register by calling the library's reference department at 330-364-4474, ext. 101.
