A natural gas line leak near the Newcomerstown Middle School caused the school to be evacuated last Tuesday.

Newcomerstown Schools' Superintendent Jeff Staggs said a strong odor of gas came through the building shortly before 10 a.m.

At which time, the student body and staff was evacuated to the Newcomerstown Church of Christ.

After contacting Columbia Gas about the problem, it was determined that it would be hours before the problem was resolved. Therefore, the students were released early at 12:30 p.m. after eating lunch at the West Elementary School.

"The building has been checked and is fine," Staggs said, "and the smell is gone."

School is scheduled to be in session tomorrow (Thursday).

The Newcomerstown Middle School has grades six through eight in the building or some 275 students in all.

No other school buildings in the district were effected by the gas leak.
