DOVER -- Movie buffs and patrons of all ages are invited to Dover Public Library the first Saturday of every month for a free showing of an Academy-Award-winning film. Dates are as follows: February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3. All showings begin at 2 p.m. Films are rated PG-13 or lower and run about two hours. Interested patrons can call the library at 330-343-6123 to register or for more information.
Movie fan and Teen Librarian Liz Strauss was responsible for choosing a wide variety of films for the library's Cinema Saturday programs. "I love unusual Oscar trivia," comments Strauss.
"That's how I found the films for our line-up," Strauss. "They all have an interesting side-story when it comes to their Oscars."
See if you can guess the library's Oscar-winning Cinema Saturday line-up based on the following trivia.
February's film is a classic romantic comedy from 1934. It was the first film to win all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay. It is also one of only three films in history to do so.
In March, the library will show a film inspired by the true story of Michael Oher. From 2009, this film won Sandra Bullock a Best Actress Oscar the day after she was awarded a Worst Actress Razzie for a different film.
April's film is a cult classic from 1988, featuring a creative blend of animated and live action characters. The film won Oscars for Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing as well as a Special Achievement Award for the animation direction and the creation of the cartoon characters.
Finally, May's film is a Best Animated Feature winner from 2010. It features an all-star cast of characters that children have known and loved since 1995. The third adventure of this unique group of friends was also the third animated film in history to be nominated for Best Picture.
