More than 700 people took part in the New Year's Eve festivities in Newcomerstown which officially kicked off the Newcomerstown Bicentennial celebration.
"It was a great night for our community to kick-off our bicentennial," said committee co-chairperson Pat Cadle.
First Night was a family-friendly, alcohol-free community celebration starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 31 and continued until midnight.
Those who ventured north to Newcomerstown were able to participate and be entertained by six different events prior to the fireworks at midnight.
The six venues that had 20-minute performances included: Pipe organ and grand piano performances, Native American music, a puppet show, a magic show, a presentation regarding the trains that once came through Newcomerstown, and a location where children could play games that had a disc jockey who played oldies music.
"We owe a special gratitude to the members of those organizations for supplying refreshments and assistance whenever it was needed. A multitude

The evening capped off at midnight with a special 12-minute fireworks presentation that was made possible from donations from the Newcomerstown area community and especially 31 Inc. in Newcomerstown.
"The Newcomerstown First Night celebration was a huge success. I think everyone who participated in making it all happen should give themselves a pat on the back knowing it achieved every goal; to provide a safe fun New Year's Eve celebration, to offer it free of charge to anyone, to show the community we are a proud and heart felt community, and generate an enthusiastic kickoff to our celebratory year," said William "Bill" McCulley, committee co-chairperson. "Now we need to keep that excitement going. Our planning committee is one of the best of its kind and I know we are all very excited to provide a memorable experience for all who join in. I have enormous confidence in this amazing 'team' void of personal agenda and full of spirit not to mention talent. 'We are Newcomerstown.'"
This year is packed full of events to take part in to celebrate Newcomerstown's 200th birthday. A few of the upcoming events include an art show, Valentine's Day dance, historical presentations, and military recognition.
