Wade Matchett, a freshman at Newcomerstown High School, completed an Eagle Scout project at Cy Young Memorial Park on July 30, 2016. The project was to construct a memorial-type of display of bricks engraved with the names of various donors and others in memoriam. He created a special area, complete with a bench, near the flag pole in the park.
When asked how he came up with the idea for the project, Matchett responded, "I got a call from the mayor, who was also one of the people who helped sell the pavers, and was in charge of the 'save the pool' committee. He gave me a few ideas and then I came up with the project."
"The hardest part of the project," he continued, "was getting other scouts to help. When the weather was good to do the concrete, it was hard to find others that didn't have something else to do."
What was the most rewarding part of the project? Matchett said, "Giving back to the community. Also, when I asked others for help and said it was for an Eagle Service Project, they were all were more than willing to help to get parts of it done."
Matchett, a member of Troop 406, went for his Eagle Board of Review on Feb. 9.
