There was definitely music is Newcomerstown schools before 1916. But the earliest yearbook documentation of music in our schools is from 1916 when the Newcomerstown High School yearbook was called the Rambler. In it, published without any names or other information, were photos of the NHS Orchestra and the Double Quartet that appears to have served as the choir. The orchestra shows only 15 musicians and the Double Quartet shows 10 members ... maybe math was not taught at that time, or maybe a double quintet or a simple dectet just did not sound as "spiffy."
