Caito Foods Ohio Distribution Center, 500 Enterprise Dr., Newcomerstown, gathered employees in an 11:30 a.m. meeting today, March 16, and announced that they will permanently close their Newcomerstown facility on May 15, 2017. Employees were told that if they remained on the job until the closing date, a severance package would be given. There are approximately 62 employees affected by the closure.

Newcomerstown Mayor Pat Cadle stated, "The village is concerned. Anytime you lose a business like that it has an effect on the community, both with revenue, and on those that live and work here. We have contacted the CIC and county commissioners. The ROIC and village officials are also involved.. The bottom line is, we have talked to SpartanNash [the Grand Rapids, Mich. company acquired Caito Foods in November 2016] and the manager at Caito. As of this point, it is a shutdown. There has not been a decision by Spartan as to what they are going to do with the building and surrounding property. They have several options that include to sell, lease, or repurpose the property with another one of their holdings. We are meeting with county officials next week to discuss what our options are."

More information will be posted as details become available.
