Newcomerstown High School 100th Graduating Class Holds Reunion

William Casteel, Correspondent

Thirty-five years ago Newcomerstown High School observed a historical milestone when the Class of 1982 graduated. The class of ninety-nine graduates received their diplomas on Sunday, May 23, 1982. The commencement was planned to take place at Lee Stadium, but due to an earlier storm, and another pending for that afternoon, the commencement took place in the NHS gymnasium.

The first Newcomerstown High School class commencement took place at the Presbyterian Church on Friday evening of June 2, 1882. The class consisted of five graduates: Lulu A. Johns, Mary F. Neighbor, Millie R. Reneker, Ella Roseborough, Clancy B. Vogenitz. The class received diplomas following completion of a three year course of study that was required to meet graduation requirements. The course was changed to a four year course in 1905. The Board of Education consisted of George R. Little, President, A.C. Tufford, Clerk, S.W. Tyhurst, Treasurer, J.R. Mulvane, John T. Pocock, and Frank Miskimen.

On Saturday, July 29, 2017 thirty-five class members, along with spouses and guests, met at Cy Young Lanes bowling alley in Newcomerstown. Class members traveled from various places including Gig Harbor, Washington, Lakeland, Florida, New Bern, North Carolina, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Thirteen class members are deceased. Classmate, Michael Stocker, passed away in August 1980, just prior to the beginning of the class entering their junior year. A special memorial photo display was on view during the reunion, along with a memory album that contained all of the class's elementary school group pictures from Kindergarten through fifth grade.

The decorations for the reunion included the class's flower, white rose tinted blue, and the class colors of midnight blue and silver were on display.

The reunion committee members were William Casteel and Debbie (Clark) Kovach. The next reunion, the fortieth, will take place in 2022.
