WEST LAFAYETTE — RIdgewood High junior Keith Claxon booted a 36-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the game to give host Ridgewood High a thrilling 27-24 victory over Garaway in Inter-Valley Conference action Friday night.

Claxon’s game-winning kick came just a minute after a 24-yard attempt was blocked by Garaway.

"Keith is such a weapon for us and I’m really proud of him for stepping up and making that kick," RHS coach JohnSlusser offered. "Overall, I thought we were really good with our kick coverage teams as well as in the kicking game."

Claxon was perfect on three PAT kicks along with a first half 32-yard field goal.

The Generals (5-2, 1-1 IVC South) started quickly after taking the opening kickoff and putting a touchdown on the board on a six-yard run by sophomore Kaden Smith at the 7:45 mark of the first quarter.

After a three-and-out by Garaway (3-4, 0-2 IVC South), the Generals added a second scoring drive, capped by a five-yard run by Isaiah Lamneck to make it 14-0 at the 5:05 mark of the first period.

Garaway got on the board with 2:23 left in the first stanza on an eight-yard run by junior quarterback Dawson Ley.

Ridgewood had a quick response with senior QB Kolton Alexander connecting with Jarrett Slusser on a 63-yard TD pass with 1:39 left in the first quarter.

Claxon’s first field goal extended the RHS lead to 24-6 with 2:35 left in the first half. Ley then found the end zone again from 19 yards out just before the half to make it 24-12 at the intermission.

The third belonged to Garaway as the Generals ran just six offensive plays, while the visitors ran 27 plays and evened the score at 24-24.

Brady Winters had both third-quarter touchdowns on runs of four and 15 yards to set up an exciting fourth quarter.

Ridgewood finished with 245 yards passing and 165 rushing while Garaway had 128 through the air and 211 on the ground.

Smith led the Generals with 104 yards on 14 carries while Winters and Ley had 96 and 95, respectively, for the Pirates.
