CANTON  -- A late-night fight left a 19-year-old man charged with murder and his mother's boyfriend in the county morgue, according to city detectives.

Kurt Hickenbottom, a Zanesville-area man who has been staying with his mother and six younger siblings at a home in the 1000 block of Spring Avenue NE, was arrested there about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, Stark County Jail records show.

He is accused of killing Joseph E. Jarvis, 26, of Wadsworth, who suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso, said Lt. Roger Crihfield of the Canton Police Department's Detective Bureau.

Police were called about 10:15 p.m. Thursday to the home, where Jarvis and Hickenbottom had been fighting, the lieutenant said.

Jarvis was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m. in the emergency room at Aultman Hospital, said Harry Campbell, chief investigator for Stark County Coroner Dr. Anthony Bertin. Campbell said an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.

Hickenbottom was jailed on a murder charge, the jail records show. According to the records, he admitted to fatally stabbing the Jarvis with a knife.

Hickenbottom remained in the jail Friday, held without bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.

Stark County Court records contained no information about Hickenbottom. But Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction records show Jarvis was on parole, having been released from prison in July after serving time for burglary in Medina County.
