Long time Chamber and community members who have seen Newcomerstown through thick and thin were honored at the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce annual banquet recently.
Chamber Vice President Scott Welch noted Gary and Janet Chaney’s dedication is unmatched as the couple was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The two have worn many hats as part of the Chamber, from holding offices, being an instrumental part of the Cy Young Festival Commitee and with other organizations and more in the village.
They say it all started in 1971 with Gary’s job in Newcomerstown. Witnessing some hard times in for the village in the past, the couple said they are happy to see so much progress and that they like being part of that. Janet says she takes part and wouldn’t expect others to do things if she doesn’t "walk the walk" herself.
The theme of the banquet was "all aboard," as ChamberTreasurer Paula Emery urged those attended to take part, be committed and get on the train to success using the track that Newcomerstown is on.
The keynote speaker was Newcomerstown Mayor Pat Cadle who personified the village as a train heading in the positive direction. Cadle has a list of 30 village goals, some met and some in-the-works for the year. He asked members and guests to get onboard and keep the rails hot by carrying and reaching more improvements in 2018.
Gary Chaney was also given special recognition as past treasurer, along with other former officers. Other awards went to:
• Chief Netawatwees Award: Newcomerstown McDonald’s for the new renovation.
• Hometown Hero Award: Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Durben.
• Organization of the Year: Meals-on-Wheels/Harcutus.
• Community Improvement Award: Fit4U Nutrition and the Newcomerstown Public Library.
• Kelly Ault Veteran Award: USAF veteran and Newcomerstown Honor Guard member Tom Apple.
• Chamber Member of the Year: Treasuere Paula Emery.
The meal and appetizers were catered by generous support and or donations by community and Chamber members, including: Baker’s IGA, April’s Country Kitch’n, Terry’s Pizza, Shumaker Farms, Pearl Valley Cheese, and John Ourant. A wine tasting was also provided by Yellow Butterfly Winery.
