Looking for fun in the sun? 10 things you should know about Cy Young Pool in Newcomerstown

The wet, cool weather of late may not have you looking forward to the upcoming swim season. Soon, however, area pools will be opening up and Cy Young Pool in Newcomerstown is looking forward to a busy season.

A big goal pool manager Kristen Casteel has set for this season is getting more adults in the water.

"I’m really hoping to see more adults at the pool," she said. "I know we have a group of kids that are always going to be here unless they are sick or on vacation."

Here’s information that will help you get your feet wet.

Hours

The pool, located at Cy Young Park, will be open each day from noon to 5 p.m. The move to seven days a week allows for less lost days during the swimming season in case of inclement weather.

When does the season open?

The pool will be open May 26, 27 and 28 for Memorial Day weekend. It will then close a couple of days while kids finish up school before opening back up on May 31 for the full season. The pool will close the regular season on Aug. 20 when school begins but will open for the Aug. 25-26 weekend and again Sept. 1-3 for the Labor Day weekend.

Admission prices

Cost to swim is $4 across the board. Any child 5 and under gets in free.

Want a season pass? Pre-sale prices (from April 2 through May 28) will be $50 per person and $135 per family for in-district residents. Cost is $70 per person and $145 for a family living out of district.

Season tickets purchased after May 28 will be $70 per person and $160 per family for in-district residents. Cost will be $80 per person and $180 per family for those living out of district.

How about a party?

Pool parties are available from 7 to 10 p.m. every night excluding Thursdays throughout the season at $100 per hour. Shelters are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All reservations and payments must be done at the Newcomerstown municipal building. Call 740-498-6313 for more information.

Back by popular demand …

Every Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. there will be the opportunity for family swims. Cost is $10 per family. Passes do not apply for this event.

Swimming lessons

The first set of lessons will be scheduled June 18-21. The next opportunity for lessons will be July 23 to 26.

Group 1 beginners are scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m.; Group 2 beginners class is 6 to 7 p.m. and Group 3 intermediate / advanced from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $35 per person, which covers all four days.

Casteel said lessons will cover water development skills and stroke refinement. She also said that the lesson will take 45 minutes and students can then have 15 minutes for playing. There also will be swim diapers available for children who are not toilet trained. Cost for a diaper is $1.

Water aerobics and adult swim

An adult swim is available each day from 11 until noon. Water aerobics are offered from 11 until noon and 5 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Cost is only $2, however those with a season pass do not have to pay.

Seasoned staff

Casteel is happy to have an experienced lifeguard staff. She said the staff is comprised of Newcomerstown and Ridgewood kids and a couple who are returning from college for the summer. They will be well-trained as Casteel is a YMCA LGI. The staff will be using a three-guard rotation. In addition to their duties at the pool, Casteel said staff will be taking care of lawn cutting and other chores.

Concession stand

There will be food and beverages available at the concession stand. Casteel said the Starlight Enterprises Inc. Employment Department will be helping with the concession stand this year. They will be working with job coaches and helping to serve pool patrons during break time.

More help

Also helping is the Adult Developmental Services. They will be cleaning the shelters on Monday and Wednesday mornings. They also will help to clean up sticks and debris that gets blown into the park.
