MASSILLON —Day one of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III Regional track meet proved to be a tough day for local athletes in their quest to make the state meet.

Only sophomore Hunter Garretson of Newcomerstown was able to secure his bid to Columbus by capturing first place in the pole vault with a leap of 14-00.

In day one preliminary events, the lone local contingent able to advance to Friday’s finals was the Buckeye Trail boys’ 4X400 relay team of Trey Dougherty, Chase Stillion, Nathan LePage and Owen Stratton who finished in seventh place with a time of 3:34.56 to qualify for the finals.

Several local athletes who just missed out on finishing in the top four to advance to Columbus in field events finals action were Shakur Peyton of Shenandoah (5th/20-08) in the boys long jump; Nick Miller of Shenandoah (7th/144-07) in the boys’ discus;Caldwell’s Taylor Ramsey (6th/34-04.75) in the girls shot put.
