Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. That of course is Philippians 4:8. I was reminded of this verse recently as I listened to the radio. I was driving and was out of range to pick up "Clean Air" which I usually listen to so I was checking other stations for something worth hearing. I came across a station that was playing an interview that had been recorded sometime in the past. The interview was between a radio host and a musician, performer, song writer who passed away recently. The interview in itself was rather interesting, but then they played a song that the musician had recorded with another country singer who was famous in his own right. He too, has passed away, some time ago.
The song was a typical country song; boy loses girl, or sometimes she is the loser. It was depressing! By the end of the song I was ready for some gospel music. I realized, again, partly why it was that I quit listening to country music many years ago.
Life has its downside that I cannot always avoid. I don’t need anything added to bring me down. I need to watch, hear and read what adds encouragement, energy and pleasure to my life. I read a lot, but if the story does not have God threaded all the way through it, I can’t read it. I no longer have TV and movies that I watch need to be uplifting and encouraging. The same goes for the music. I need what will encourage me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
I challenge you to read Philippians 4:8 again and see if there is a blessing in it for you.
