TEN YEARS AGO - 2000

Jordan Wharff, five-year-old son of Carl and Trisha (Loader) Wharff, won the 1999 CRA Junior Mini-Quad Championship after competing at racing tracks across Ohio and Pennsylvania. He took firsts in 40 of 49 events to earn the Number One Plate for the 2000 season.

Basketball: Trojans lost at Malvern 62-51 and won over Tuscarawas Central Catholic 55-47; Lady Trojans Bekah Jones and Tana McIntire each scored 16 points to lead a 58-52 win over Sandy Valley; Indian Valley Braves lost 66-62 at Sandy Valley and 57-49 to Cambridge; Ridgewood Generals lost in double overtime to Wellsville 78-75 and 83-60 to Strasburg.

Deaths: Arthella June Rice, 77; Mary T. Weber, 71; Richard W. Slasor, 74; Charles A. Carter, 78.

TWENTY YEARS AGO - 1990

Newcomerstown Village Council approved participation in Tuscarawas County curbside recycling.

Mark Cutshall, Newcomerstown, manager of Baker's Foods in Freeport, was a guest on David Letterman Show for winning the National Grocers Assn. national "Best Bagger" championship.

Area basketball: Trojans lost 96-86 to Hiland and 75-60 to Buckeye Trail; Ridgewood won 82-81 over Coshocton and 65-53 over Malvern; Indian Valley won 60-57 over Sandy Valley and lost to Coshocton 54-52.

Deaths: W. Robert Parks, 73; Richard M. Berger, 71; Homer M. Arnold, 87; Jane Woodard; Mary Steger, 94; Zelma M. Watson, 74; Cora L. Chapman, 92.

THIRTY YEARS AGO - 1980

Atty. Thomas Little new solicitor of Newcomerstown succeeding Atty. Patricia DeBoer-Byard.

Brad Nolan only first place winning Trojan wrestler at Springfield Invitational.

Forest Baker, Newcomerstown, opened The Buckeye restaurant on Heller Drive., formerly Little Phoebe Restaurant.

Barb Westhafer received a silver tray from Dick Watson, owner-operator of Emerald Lanes, for first ever 7-10 split at the bowling alley.

Trojans won over Guernsey Catholic Central 74-43 and lost to two state-ranked teams - Buckeye Trail 58-45 and Zanesville Rosecrans 53-45. Ben Wright was player of the week.

Ridgewood ended a nine-game losing streak with 80-53 victory over Cadiz. General Tom Lusk and Mark Ellwood scored 26 and 24 points, respectively.

Indian Valley South won 77-45 over Bettsville and lost 37-33 to Tuscarawas Central Catholic.

Deaths: Minnie Andrews, 63; John G. McGuffey, 91; Agnes Rehard, 81.

 

FORTY YEARS AGO - 1970

Temperatures rise to 52 degrees before dipping to four below zero.

Trojans win over Brunnerdale 65-50; Indian Valley South bows to Ridgewood 60-54 and loses to Guernsey Catholic 62-61.

FIFTY YEARS AGO - 1960

Chief John Lawver, Russell Reynolds, Bill J. Ludwig, Arthur L. Studd and Robert O. Davis comprise local police force.

World Day of Prayer Feb. 7 at EUB Church.

Trojans lost to Gnadenhutten 64-60.

Death: Mrs. Cecil Haver.

SIXTY YEARS AGO - 1950

Oscar G. Moffet and Lloyd E. Bair purchase Leech Motor Company.

Trojans defeat Dennison 57-47, and are now tied for ECOL lead.

Sam Nelson, West Lafayette, buys Hampton's Store on Main St. Charles Botimer Jr. will be manager.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO - 1940

Local weather reports kept by M.R. Yingling show January has lowest temperatures in 15 years.

EIGHTY YEARS AGO - 1930

Doris Jean Shurtz dies of burns received when kerosene explodes. Her mother, Mrs. Alvie Shurtz, and brother Jackie were seriously burned.

NINETY YEARS AGO - 1920

Cemetery injunction brought by East State Street residents is won by the village.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO - 1910

Mayor Lloyd Murphy has ordered all slot machines out.

WCTU holds membership drive with Mrs. Frank Johns and Mrs. C.W. Brode captains.
