Malvern edges Ridgewood WEST LAFAYETTE " Malvern edged by Ridgewood on Tuesday, 48-46, as Max Kapron hit a short jumper as time ran out for the win. Both teams put up the points in the first quarter with the Generals emerging with a 23-18 lead. Ridgewood held onto its lead by halftime, 30-27, and clung to a 40-39 advantage as the fourth frame began. Adam Wackerly of the Hornets (8-5, 7-3 IVC) had a game-high 20 points. Travis Tucci added 12. Ridgewood 23 7 10 6 " 46 Malvern 18 9 12 9 - 48 Strasburg beats Nc'town Pressure defense and a precise flex offense helped visiting Strasburg slide by the Trojans last Friday, 54-42, in Inter-Valley Conference action. The Tigers (8-5, 6-4 IVC) came out of the gates strong as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter. The Trojans (5-10, 2-9 IVC) eventually stirred from dormancy when sophomore Matt Ayres scored on a pair of free throws and a post move, followed by a layup from Cameron Wolf. It appeared Newcomerstown was back in contention as the first quarter ended, 17-9. The Trojans carried the momentum into the beginning of the second frame, when Ayres connected on another inside shot and Caleb Rankin rattled in two foul shots at the 6:56 mark, making the score 19-13 in favor of Strasburg. A minute later, Bubba Harris scored two consecutive layups off steals to bring the Trojans within two, 19-17. The visitors responded when Bell hit a "triple" and Hunter Schneiter converted a layup, pushing the Strasburg lead to 24-17 with 3:00 left in the half. Down 28-18, the Trojans scored the final two buckets of the half, layups from Ayres and Josh Miller, to head into the locker room down six, 28-22. Apparently, each coach had a defense-oriented halftime speech, because the third quarter was a war of attrition, with Strasburg edging out an 8-6 advantage. The slow third frame set up a shootout in the final period, beginning when the teams traded layup-for-layup and the first minute of the fourth quarter looked like a track meet. Up 40-32 with 6:40 left in the contest, Strasburg used a 14-10 run to end the game and return home with a league win. The streak featured a pair of layups from Austin Hostetler to put the game out of reach, 52-39, with 3:11 left. The game was not without its bright points for the hosts, as the promising second-year forward, Ayres, lead all scorers with 14 points and four blocked shots. Harris recorded 11 points and eight rebounds as the only other Trojan in double figures; Miller added eight markers; and Rankin tallied six points and had four assists. Schneiter led a balanced scoring attack for the Tigers, notching 13 points. Hostetler poured in 10; Bell had 11; and Bonifant scored nine counters, pulled down six boards and hammered three blocks. Newcomerstown shot 16-of-32 (50 percent) from the field, and 10-of-15 (66 percent) from the stripe, while the visitors hit 21-of-45 (46 percent) field goal attempts and 8-of-9 (88 percent) foul shots. The Trojans enjoyed a slight rebounding advantage, 23-20, but coughed up 15 turnovers while forcing 12 Strasburg miscues. NHS head coach Dan Weekley credited the defensive effort of Strasburg in the loss. "We started out slow in the first quarter and got down behind the eight-ball," Weekley noted. "They are a good team. We got back in the game, but we had some mental mistakes handling their press, it caused some unforced turnovers. "That was the big thing...the turnovers," the Trojan coach continued. "Ayres is only a sophomore, but he has played with every big-name player so far this year, and I think this is his fifth or sixth straight double-figure game. I thought he did a tremendous job." Newcomerstown won the reserve game, 39-36. Four Trojans finished with seven points each, including Joe Raach, Cody Sproat, Tyler Craigo, and Kris Wolf.
