FLORENCE I. SMITH
Florence I. Smith, 89, a resident of the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past year and a longtime resident of Buckhorn Road, Salem Township, Newcomerstown, passed away Monday morning, Oct. 18, 2010, at Union Hospital in Dover.
Florence was born in Adams Township, Coshocton County, Jan. 18, 1921, a daughter of the late Michael H. Bahmer, who died in 1967, and the late Erma Schumacher Bahmer, who died in 1971.
She was a graduate of Stone Creek High School, Class of 1939. Florence was a homemaker for all her adult life and assisted her husband, Wayne, with the ownership and operation of their Salem Township farm. She was a member of the former First Presbyterian Church, Newcomerstown, where she served as a deacon, a member of the Women's Association, and the Patricia Circle. Florence was also a member of the Buckhorn Grange 1445, Salem Township, where she held the office of treasurer and the Pomona Office (Three Graces). She enjoyed traveling, gardening, raising flowers, baking, and cooking.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, J. Wayne Smith, who passed away Sept. 14, 2003, and whom she married Feb. 8, 1942. Also deceased are a granddaughter, Pamela Renee Conner of Newcomerstown; a granddaughter-in-law, Tamara K. Rexroad Conner of Newcomerstown; a son-in-law, Donald W. Dunfee of Dover, who died in 2006; sisters Hazel Bahmer Swigert of Newcomerstown and Maxine Helmreich of Dover; and brothers-in-law, Clarence Helmreich and Russell Hawk, both of Dover.
Florence is survived by three daughters and a son, Mary Ann (James C.) Conner and Patricia L. (Joseph C.) Somogye, all of Newcomerstown, Linda F. Dunfee of Dover and John W. (Judith E.) Smith of Newcomerstown; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Audrey (Ralph) Kilchenman and Wilma Hawk, all of Dover; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Florence's life will be Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Robert W. Millspaugh conducted the services. Burial followed in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Following the graveside services, the family gathered for a luncheon and fellowship in the Community Center of the Victory Assembly of God Church, Newcomerstown.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Florence's name to an individual's favorite charity.
